When I was about twelve years old, I was one day seized by a sudden impulse to be a writer. My first attempt, a story about warfare between Indians and colonists during the French and Indian War(I had just seen a movie about that), came to an abrupt end at the bottom of the first page due to a sudden depletion of ideas. I then realized that I didn’t know anything about Indians, colonists, or the French. A second attempt was a Civil War era Southern plantation story set in South Carolina, my ancestral home state. But ancestors or no, this story met an even quicker doom than the first one, and for very similar reasons.

Writing began to seem to me like a hopeless endeavor and I relegated it to the “ one-of-these-days-when-I-know-more-and-have-more-time” corner of my mind. Fifty years zipped by, but somewhere along the way I read the sage advice, “Write what you know about.” As I neared retirement, I realized I now had a whole lifetime of experiences(and a little bit of knowledge) to draw from, and I set about resuming my frustrated childhood ambition.

The novels you see here were initially rejected over and over again by the traditional print publishing houses, minor ones as well as major. Even hiring an agent led nowhere. Then one day I discovered the magic that is internet publishing, and things changed, with Whiskey Creek Press giving me my first break.

Backtracking a bit, as a high school student, I studied(some), played football for five years, and edited the school yearbook for two. After graduating from the University of Virginia, I served three years as an officer in the U. S. Navy, two of those years aboard an aircraft carrier operating most of the time in the Mediterranean. I then spent the next thirty-five years in teaching. Holding the M. A. and Ph. D. degrees, I taught Spanish at the University of Delaware, Virginia Tech, and Florida Southern College. I have published professional and inspirational articles, and one short story. Married, I am the father of three grown daughters, and the grandfather of eight children. My hobbies include foreign travel and photography. Retired, I live in New Castle, Delaware, where I am having fun sleeping late, plotting a third novel, and ignoring other people’s timetables.
